i'm working this saturday so I have a rare weekday off. I actually set my alarm for 4:30 am so I could appreciate the awesomeness of sleeping in. :) (which I did until 8!) And then took a quick walk to bedford hill coffee shop with jonah and teddy for coffee and pastries. my to do list today: finish holiday shopping, watch an episode or two of felicity, and RELAX!

this weekend has been lovely and relaxing! friday evening jonah and i attended the secret science club's 6th annual "carnivorous nights taxidermy contest." which was amazing and i think jonah is inspired for next years contest! a saturday morning a trip to dean and deluca for some xmas stocking stuffers. and then saturday night started with a racquet club cocktail followed by dinner at do or dine, a skip away from our house. and sunday morning gift wrapping and now cozy music listening on the sofa... yay weekends!

i am always inspired by vinatge wrangler pieces. and recently inspired by wrangler australia. and maybe it's because of the cool couple behind the australian brand, andy paltos (creative director) and sarah gilsenan (womenswear designer). "together they’ve amassed the largest archive of wrangler designs in the world, most of them packed into shelves, racks…even a fireplace in sarah’s melbourne apartment.“it sounds corny but we live the brand,” says andy. “we travel twice a year looking for vintage wrangler.” He points to one of his favourite pieces. “that jacket is from a farmer in kansas. he wore it every day for 50 years.” after he died, andy bought it for the collection."-read more here ok, american wrangler... please do this!

while hiking through the woods at jonah's mother's house we always pass this old abandoned house. towards the back of it is a wall that is ready to fall and looks like it used to be a kitchen. there are four tiles that remain on the wall and two of them have amazing ships on them! they are great old tiles. i always think the wall will be gone the next time we are there, so here they are close up...

hello moonshine!

yesterday jonah and i, along with our friends eileen and evan, visited kings county distillery in bushwick. it's new york city's oldest whiskey distillery, and it's only 8 months old! it's a very small operation. they make moonshine (unaged corn whiskey) and new bourbon.
on the weekends they are offering distillery tours on the hour between 1 and 5 p.m., and they are also open for tastings and sales. read about it here.they have just started producing bourbon and you can only buy it at the distillery at this time. i love that our bottle is marked that it's from barrel #1! their moonshine is easy to find at stores in brooklyn.since i have met jonah i somehow know more about scotch, whiskey, and bourbon! :)

my friend heather made this dish last year at a thanksgiving dinner and it was so delicious! i finally had a chance to make it this week. it's so simple and yummy! jonah broiled salmon to accompany the rich and creamy sprouts... a simple fall dinner.

pot pie fun!

last thursday jonah and i made mushroom pot pies with gouda biscuit topping. they were fun and satisfying to make! one of the fun things about making these pot pies was getting to buy oven safe bowls. i can't wait to use them to make french onion soup!
i made the filling the night before and jonah made the biscuit topping just before placing them in the oven which gave us time to enjoy manhattans with our friends while they baked!

a candlelit setting always helps create a cozy supper!
recipe is here. this recipe was good (not amzing though). i want to try a chicken pot pie next time!

catching up! honeymoon: hotel

time has flown by since our big wedding day in june! and maybe it's safe to say i'm back to posting? well, i will try! and i will catch up starting with a cute hotel that we stayed at on our last few days of our honeymoon in rome.we stayed at the hotel gregoriana on our few days of our italy trip. it was a sweet surprise when we arrived and our room wasn't ready and we ended up in the penthouse. and it was charmingly pink and green with old world details and modern accents!

i snapped photos of these breathtaking sèvres pieces at the met recently... one a vase w/ candle holders and the other a potpourri holder.since studying about sèvres porcelain in school i am always so excited to see pieces in person. these two pieces are believed to have been purchased by louis xv in 1760.

last week was a very sad week... my grandma vi passed away. thankfully she passed at home on her ranch in california with all of her kids and some of her grandchildren by her side. she was an amazing and strong woman that i love dearly and the ultimate matriarch to our family. we are all mourning the loss but will always celebrate her life.i have always cherished this necklace that i have that she made for my mom in the 60's. my grandma was an avid rock hound until the end. she collected, polished, and cut stones and made beautiful jewelry... just one of her many hobbies.

i finished my holiday wrapping!! this year i used navy bias cut fabric ribbon, silver sparklers, brown boxes, and craft paper. i picked up these discarded rolls of blue bias cut fabric in downtown la. I couldn't leave them as i saw them near the fabric scrap dumpster one day at work last year. the silver sparklers actually were previously part of a x-mas light set. I picked up a huge bag of them at a thrift store a few years ago and use them every year for adding sparkle to wrapping!and i had a special helper who just wanted to play!

a walk in the woods... 3 abandoned houses

on thanks giving weekend we to a long walk in the woods in pomona, ny and came across three abandoned houses...

1. the mid century modern house. previously used for a summer camp this house is amazing with all of the built in details, and it's in the woods with a stream running along the back side of it. it was locked but we managed to peek inside to see all of the 50's details. this is the type of house i dream of buying and restoring...
2. the early 90's modern house. this house is frozen in mid-construction with tools and materials still on the site. this was so eerie to see and there isn't even a road to this site... it's just in the middle of the woods all by itself! it would have been an awesome completed house...3. the boarded up house. this house was scary. we managed to go in the back door and it was as if some one was living there not to long ago. it was empty, but the bizarre part was there was refrigerator that was stocked with really old beers. oh, and i saw real live holly with berries... so cute!

today jonah and i ventured just outside the city to the jamaica bay wild life refuge. it was great to walk off some of the holiday indulgences and see such awesome landscape!

jonah bird watching... very seriously.on the way home we stopped at the farm on adderley for brunch in ditmas park. we discovered that they have salted and buttered chocolate brioche toast... to die for. we will definitely go back for more!

cornishware hearts... old and new

i picked up new cornishware salt and pepper shaker set a few years ago. i have always loved the bold stripes and have fond memories drinking out of my grandmother's cornishware cups and saucers as a kid. this weekend in nyack i picked up a great gravy dish/mini pitcher. the antiques dealer told me that it is from the 40's or 50's...
today one can buy new cornishware here. it's a bit harder to buy here in the u.s. though. here is some info for buying antique/vintage cornishware. cornishware stripes are definitely on my radar when i am out and about!
